Heat

In the event of dangerously high temperatures, cooling centers will be made available throughout Calvert County for residents to cool off. View Calvert County Government Press Releases at www.calvertcountymd.gov/News to see if there are any active alerts or safety recommendations.

The National Weather Service issues an excessive heat watch when temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees with a heat index value around 110 degrees. When a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures is expected the Calvert County Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management, advises citizens to take precautions during extreme heat:

  • Limit outdoor activities
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Wear light clothing
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Work outdoors early or very late in the day
  • Check on friends, family and neighbors, especially those who are elderly, very young, or have medical conditions.

Animal Safety Alerts

Whenever a weather alert is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Calvert County, the Department of Public Safety may issue an animal safety alert advising the public of appropriate animal safety precautions, in accordance with Calvert County Code § 7-6-103: Abuse; neglect.
